Attractive living museum of western Ukraine, lying at the foot of the Carpathians, Lviv boasts a heritage of over two thousand among historical and architecture monuments, and has therefore long been competing with Kiev for the cultural leadership
Lviv city centre has belonged to Unesco world heritage since 1998. Among the civil palaces’ architectural gems, where Baroque and Renaissance styles happily merge, make sure to visit Ploshcha Rynok square. The Town Hall looks onto the square, a building dating back to XIX century.
Still in the heart of the old town is the Catholic Cathedral, one of the most interesting Gothic buildings of the city, dating to the end of XIV century. In the inside, the Chapel belonging to the Boim family contains one of the most elaborate stone engravings in all Lviv. The same stone is to be found in many other buildings’ decorations, both religious and non-religious.
Enjoy an uncommon experience visiting the open-air Museum of Folk Architecture and Rural Life, located at about 2 km east from the Old Town. On a surface of more than 60 hectares are displayed typical examples of the national culture including a hundred of farms, smithies, windmills, churches and wooden schools.
