Heraklion

It is the largest city of the Crete island, its foundation dating back to the IX century b.C. Its current aspect stems from the successive Arab, Venetian and Ottoman dominiations.
LThe fortifications sorrounding the old city were erected by the Arabs and then reinforced by the Venetians in the XV century. Of the 7 original bastions, once present, only the Martinengo one still exists.

The city is furthermore equipped with a sorrounding wall with four entry gates, of which Chanioporta (1570), with the distinctive Lion of St. Marcus, and Porta nuova (1587) in the southern part of the city, are still intact. In the old Venetian harbour it is also possible to admire the dock where the ships were being built, whereas in the western part, the Koule fortress sticks out, erected in the XVI century.
The city centre is rich in monuments: the XVI century Venetian Loggia, the Lions Fountain (1628), Bembo Fountain, and the Turkish Charity fountain. Among the churches, St. Catherine’s (XVI century), St. Mark's and the Monastery dedicated to Saints Peter and Paul, all deserve mentioning.
