Bari

An important harbour centre of southern Italy, on the Adriatic Sea, this city has a thousand-year old history and is famous for hosting the relics of St. Nicholas in the majestic cathedral dedicated to him.
The very cathedral, in Romanic style, built after the move of the relics of the saint from Anatolia, back in the XII century, represents one of the favourite destinations both for the catholic and the orthodox religious tourism. The most relevant event connected to the religious celebrations is Sagra di Maggio (May Feast), recalling the arrival of the remains of St. Nicholas into the city.
The cathedral, along with the Norman-Swabian Castle, imposing fortress of the Medieval Age, draws the profile of the ancient and most typical part of the Apulian main city called ‘Bari Vecchia’ (ancient Bari).

Recently subject of a requalification plan, ancient Bari has also become the centre of the city’s day and nightlife. Enjoy the labyrinth of small streets in a fortress on a cliff overlooking the sea with a breathtaking view: from Piazza del Ferrarese, through Piazza Mercantile, until you reach the Muraglia that ends up at the beginning of the Saint Scholastica monastery.
