PaphosA stunning tourist destination on the southern coast of the island of Cyprus, Paphos owes its fame to its crystal clear waters from which, according to myth, the Greek goddess of beauty and love was born, Aphrodite, who on these very shores met and fell in love with Adonis.
Paphos has an Old Town (Ktima) and a New Town (Kato). The latter is the tourist area, with plenty of little venues and souvenir shops. Take a stroll along its side alleys and you will find medieval baths, catacombs and small churches. Head west from the New Town and you will reach the archaeological site of Nea Pafos, with the remains of the ancient city founded in the IV century BC. But if you want to breathe in some of the authentic cultural life of Paphos, the Old Town is the place to go, housing the main museums and fine colonial buildings, now home to the government offices.
A deep blue sea invites the visitor to follow in the footsteps of Aphrodite and explore a myriad beaches of all kinds: small or large, public or fully equipped, close to the centre or secluded. As the legend has it, the enchanting white beach of Petra tou Romiou is where the goddess emerged from the crystal blue sea waters. The beach is connected to the “Baths of Aphrodite”, the springs where the goddess and Adonis first met, by an 8 km path surrounding the Akamas peninsula and offering breathtaking views along the way.
Archaeology lovers should not miss the Sanctuary of Aphrodite. This site includes the remains of a temple and of a house dating to the Roman era, a small sanctuary and a conical stone that used to represent the goddess in pre-Roman times. Located on the hills near the village of Kuklia, the site offers great views onto the sea.
Besides the beaches, another chance to experience the beauty of this coastal area of Cyprus is to travel by boat, exploring coves, sea caves and observing loggerhead sea turtles hatching in this area.
Paphos airport is 6 km from the town centre.
