Genova

A historic port city overlooking the Ligurian Sea, Genova was once one of the Mediterranean’s most powerful maritime republics and still has a strong bond with the sea today. Its port, among the largest in Europe, has shaped the city’s economic, cultural and urban development over the centuries.

At the heart of Genova lies its historic old town, one of the largest in Europe: a maze of narrow caruggi (alleys) leading to hidden squares, churches and elegant noble palaces. This is where the city’s long history truly comes to life, thanks to landmarks such as San Lorenzo Cathedral, the Ducal Palace, and the magnificent Palazzi dei Rolli, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

A visit to the redeveloped Old Port is a must. Here you’ll find the Genova Aquarium, one of the largest in Europe, along with museums and cultural venues. It’s also a popular meeting place, packed with restaurants, bars and seaside promenades.

Genova is equally famous for its views: from Spianata Castelletto, you can take in sweeping vistas of rooftops, the harbour and the sea, while coastal districts like Boccadasse offer postcard perfect scenes and a traditional seaside feel. Not to be missed are the Strada Nuova Museums, the Lanterna (the city’s iconic lighthouse), and local food specialities such as pesto, focaccia and farinata.
