SibiuClose to the Carpathian Mountains, Sibiu represents one of the most charming cities in Romania thanks to the architecture heritage it boasts. Founded in 1190 by the Saxons on an ancient Roman settlement located in the Transylvania Region, this city was the richest of the seven fortified towns along the trade route connecting East and West.
Divided into an Upper and a Lower Town, the historical centre of Sibiu has narrow, steep alleys lined with 17th-century buildings with typical gable roofs, wide squares and defence towers.
The 'Big Square' is the main one in the town, as well as the largest. This vibrating place, heart of the town since the 15th century, is overlooked by some of the most important buildings, including Brukenthal Palace, the Jesuit Church and the Council Tower, giving access to the 'small square' heaping with many shops and cafés.
The Brukenthal Palace houses the National Museum, showing works from the Flemish, German, Italian and French art traditions. The gallery also showcases bas-reliefs, coins and minerals. In the other wings of the palace you can visit the Museum of History, the Museum of Pharmacology, the Museum of Natural History and the Museum of the Arms and Hunting Trophies.
Relatively close to this palace, you can admire the Lutheran St. Mary's Cathedral, dating from the 14th century, a charming Gothic church with a high bell tower, now standing for the symbol of the city. The council tower was formerly the gate leading to the second city walls ring. Today we can admire a totally different building from the original 13th century construction: it was actually rebuilt several times, and it presently houses exhibitions and displays, but above all it is one of the most breathtaking panoramic terraces overlooking the city.
The imposing city walls turned Sibiu into one of the most prominent among the fortified cities in Central Europe. Several rings of walls were built to surround the historical centre, many of which were made of clay bricks. Currently, the south-eastern fortifications are the best preserved, where all three parallel rings are visible. All the structures are interconnected through a maze of tunnels and passages, designed to safeguard the transportation of materials and goods to and from the city and its defensive lines.
The Lower Town is a more unrefined area, connected to the Upper Town through the Bridge of Lies, the first cast-iron one in Romania.
