Second most populated city in Georgia, Kutaisi is a place to discover, in the shade of all its architectural gems and the lushy green that characterise this corner of the world between the European and Asian continents.
The city, built on the riverside banks of Rioni river, boasts a stunning historical city-centre dating back to the XVII century. Cobblestone alleys and picturesque sights of the river will take the tourist through a pleasant city walk. Here, you cannot miss out on a stopover at the central marketplace, where you can try out the Georgian culinary tradition and get hold of the local produces, especially cakes and home-made wine, among stalls of coloured spices, meats and pulses.
Just a few miles off the city, on the top of Ulkimerioni Hill, it is possible to visit Bagrati cathedral, one of UNESCO heritage sites. Built in the XI century, this gothic gem dominates Kutaisi with its solid walls which hide several frescoes in the insides. Near the cathedral rises also the Gelati Monastery, another one among UNESCO sites. Built in 1106, it was an extremely important cultural centre during the Georgian medieval times. Visiting it means being projected into another era, among breathtaking frescoes and mosaics.
Kutaisi neighbourhood also offers attractions for nature lovers. The Sataplia Nature Reserve is known for its well-kept dinosaurs fossil remains. The amazing Prometheus caves are also worth mentioning, 20 km off Kutaisi inhabited centre: 16 different rooms and itineraries to visit either on a boat or on foot, among stalactites, stalagmites, stoned waterfalls, lakes and underground rivers. Some classical music pieces will take the visitor along the walk, together with a lighting system alternating some bright and other less vivid colours, in order to make the experience even more evocative.
