Kaunas

Kaunas is a city in south-central Lithuania, and it stands out as a green pearl cast at the confluence of the Neris and Nemunas rivers.
The city was founded right on the river peninsula starting from its castle, which is the original nucleus dating back to 1361. Destroyed and rebuilt several times, the Kaunas castle houses today museum events.

In old times the city was very famous for the trade on rivers and today it is still possible to visit the original medieval residences of the traders which survived the big fire in 1732 that destroyed great part of the city.

For those into architecture in Kaunas you can admire some rare examples of gothic-style buildings with bricks, like the 'Perkūnas' house. Another peculiar building is the City Hall, which was started in 1542 and features a blend of styles like gothic, Baroque and late classical mixing in a structure defined as 'the swan' for its shape resembling the elegant acquatic bird.

The two tours on the funicular cables are an interesting visit, and they are still nowadays used as public transport from which it is possible to admire the city landscape of woods, fields, river beaches and buildings nicely fitting in the context.
Don't forget to take a stroll on Vilnius street, the most central in the city. Fully pedestrian, it hosts several cafes, restaurants and handcraft and souvenirs shops.
