Odessa

Odessa is a port city on the Black Sea coast, in the south of Ukraine. It is renowned for its beaches and 19th century buildings such as the Opera and Ballet Theatre. The imposing Potemsky Steps reaches down to Vorontsov Lighthouse, on the coast, and is universally famous as it was featured in the popular 1925 ‘Battleship Potemkin’ by director Sergej MichajlovičĖjzenštejn.

Primorsky Boulevard stretches along the coastline, a famous and dominating walk surrounded by palaces and monuments. The city architecture recalls the Mediterranean influence of the populations that reigned over it over the centuries, leaving clear evidence of their passage.

Deribasovskaya Avenue, rich in cafes, and its neighbouring city Garden, are popular meeting places. Odessa archeological Museum is another famous late-19th century building showcasing some prehistorical remains from the Back Sea. Near the museum stands a monument in honour of the writer Alexander Pushkin, in front of the neo-classic City Hall.

Under the city roads is the thick network of the Odessa catacombs, in the north-western part of which the underground Museum for the Partisan glory is found, as a testimony of the second WW resistance movement.

The area boasts a generally mild weather and beautiful sandy beaches. Arcadia district, on the sea, has a city beach well organised with entertainment, bars and discos. A special place to visit is the former Soviet Missile base in Odessa, where some remains from the cold war are kept, among which the nuclear warheads, now no longer active.
