The multiethnic, multicultural and multi-religious capital city of Georgia, Tbilisi is a perfect mix between an Asian and a Western city, where the charme of both East and West intertwines.
The term 'Tbilisi' stems from the Georgian word 'tbili', meaning lukewarm. In fact, the city boasts several warm sulphurous water springs known since old times. It was right around such natural springs that Tbilisi was founded in the V century AD. Today the sulphurous baths in Tbilisi produce 3 million litres water per day and are greatly attended by both locals and tourists.
Another interesting site is the Narikala Fortress. From its fortified walls erected in the IV century AD tourists will also be able to enjoy a breathtaking view made of brick lanes, religious buildings, sumptuous palaces and colourful houses.
The real throbbing heart of Tbilisi is Rustaveli Avenue, though, with its Moorish Opera, the Baroque Rustaveli Theatre, the Russian Vice King Palace and the Parliament.
The heart of the city centre also hosts plenty of cafes, restaurants and shops.
Don't forget to pay a visit to the flea market, with its antiques, silverware and funny gadgets. Also strongly recommended is a trip on the cable railway, which will get you to the top of Mount Mtasminda.
