Memorandum of Understanding signed between Bologna Airport and Sustenia

05/12/2025 Nazareno Ventola, CEO and General Manager of Bologna Guglielmo Marconi Airport, and Daniele Bergamini, Sole Director of Sustenia Srl, today signed in Bologna a “Memorandum of Understanding for the Environmental and Tourism Enhancement of the Territory.”

The memorandum, currently set for a three-year term with automatic renewal, establishes a structured collaboration bringing together the expertise and missions of both organizations to develop joint projects focused on the environment, biodiversity, sustainable mobility, environmental communication, and territorial promotion, in line with the objectives of the UN 2030 Agenda.

The agreement strengthens the environmental sustainability commitment of Bologna Airport—already aligned with the net-zero targets of the Climate Mission “100 Climate-Neutral and Smart Cities” (promoted by the European Commission and involving the City of Bologna) - and of Sustenia, a public company active in the protection and enhancement of the Bologna lowlands, whose shareholders include nine municipalities in the area and the Metropolitan City.

Priority areas identified include the development of initiatives for the protection of biodiversity and local ecosystems, such as the expansion of ecological rebalancing areas and projects dedicated to local habitats and species, as well as the definition of joint activities for the conservation and enhancement of biodiversity and natural landscapes. The agreement also focuses on improving sustainable accessibility, with particular attention to the Ciclovia del Sole, Ciclovia del Reno, and Ciclovia del Navile, and their connection to the airport.

The first operational guidelines of the memorandum include concrete actions for the conservation of endangered species of community interest, such as the European pond turtle, the integrated management of cycling routes connected to the airport (Ciclovia del Reno and Ciclovia del Navile), as well as the launch of pilot projects aimed at promoting sustainable use of the territory. Additional initiatives will be jointly planned in the areas of biodiversity, sustainable mobility, and environmental communication.

For these initiatives, Bologna Airport has allocated financial contributions to Sustenia totaling €110,000 over several years, including €66,000 for the completion of the reptile and amphibian center in San Giovanni in Persiceto and €40,000 for the integrated management and maintenance of the Reno and Navile cycle routes. Further initiatives may be identified during the collaboration period.

Nazareno Ventola, CEO and General Manager of Bologna Airport, stated: “Following the support provided to the Municipality of Calderara di Reno for the restoration of the Golena San Vitale area in 2022 and the creation of a 40-hectare forest belt north of the airport, it felt natural to continue our collaboration with a local organization focused on environmental sustainability and soft mobility. Together, we aim to develop projects that benefit the communities closest to Marconi Airport. We are also particularly interested in supporting the maintenance of cycle paths near the airport, as we are about to build a connecting section of EuroVelo 7 at the gateway to the city of Bologna, thereby ensuring a highly extensive and interconnected cycling network.”

“For Sustenia,” added Sustenia Director Daniele Bergamini, “this memorandum represents an important step in strengthening collaboration with private entities for the protection and enhancement of the territory, thanks to our technical and scientific expertise, which translates into concrete actions and becomes public value. This agreement is fully aligned with our mission to enhance the Bologna lowlands in terms of habitat conservation, sustainable mobility, and environmental promotion. Working together with Bologna Airport allows us to generate broader and shared impact, in line with the expectations of the community.”
