Sustainable woodland management
Bologna Airport has completed the creation of a wooded area north of the airport. It is a green area of about 40 hectares, equal to 56 football fields, and was designed to absorb carbon dioxide and preserve the landscape.
The wooded area is one of the projects included in the Decarbonisation Plan with which the Airport aims to eliminate its direct and indirect emissions by 2030.
In Italy, one person produces 5 tonnes of CO2 every year on average, so 33 trees are needed to offset the emissions of a single person. The type of plant also affects the amount of carbon dioxide captured, as does the age, size, climate and soil in which they are planted.
The goal is to achieve "sustainable forest management" certification according to the principles defined by the Forest Stewardship Council. This certification ensures the development of a diversified, sustainable, innovative, and effective forest, enhancing carbon sequestration, biodiversity, protection of water and soil resources, and landscape integration, while maintaining open and constructive dialogue with local communities as a long-term benefit for the community, ensuring:
- A quantifiable contribution to the local ecosystem services;
- improvement of the area's environmental quality;
- responsible conservation and management of resources.
