Sustainability

Bologna Airport integrates environmental, social and governance issues into its strategy and planning through a Sustainability Plan. The initiatives undertaken and their results are detailed in the reporting documents and in the dedicated information sections.
To help us achieve our sustainable development goals, we have implemented a Sustainability Plan that includes specific initiatives to monitor and reduce certain environmental impacts, including air quality, noise, energy, mobility, waste and biodiversity. The company's Sustainability Plan is based on three central pillars: Environmental sustainability (Planet), Social sustainability (People) and Economic sustainability (Prosperity).
Attention to governance aspects is also fundamental, completing the typical sustainability factors summarized in the acronym ESG on which the Group is actively working from several years.

The objective of the Plan is to progressively improve the airport’s environmental, social and governance performance through initiatives targeting the local area, passengers, the airport community and its partners, within the scope and targets outlined in the reporting sections.

Sustainability prospect plan

In its Sustainability Plan, AdB identifies the following activities as areas of focus:

  • preserve natural resources and protect biodiversity;
  • use natural resources conscientiously, apply circular economy principles and protect biodiversity;
  • concretely contribute to the fight against climate change by reducing greenhouse gas emissions;
  • improve the quality of life and well-being of the surrounding community;
  • create new job opportunities;
  • dialogue with citizens, local partners and all stakeholders;
  • offer employees a safe and inclusive workplace;
  • promote and support respect for human rights, inclusion and diversity;
  • flight against corruption and fraud and actively promote fair, collaborative and transparent business conduct towards all partners.

Progress is measured using specific indicators and projects.

The actions taken by the Group in terms of ESG issues also extend to the value chain, involving suppliers and business partners through the initiatives described in the Sustainable Supply Chain section.

Bologna Airport has set a goal to reduce and offset the CO₂ emissions attributable to activities under its direct control by 2030. This goal is based on measures to reduce energy consumption, to use energy from renewable sources, and, for any remaining emissions, to utilise offset mechanisms. The scope, implementation methods and progress are described in the sustainability report and in the Airport Carbon Accreditation (ACA) documentation. The path undertaken by Aeroporto di Bologna has so far led it to reach Level 4+ - ACA (Airport Carbon Accreditation) optimisation.

Furthermore, in 2022 AdB joined the Alliance for Zero Emissions Aviation, a voluntary association of public and private stakeholders who share the goal of planning for the possible use of electric and hydrogen-powered aircraft.

Of the numerous projects envisaged within Aeroporto di Bologna's Sustainability Plan 2022-2026, we would like to illustrate some particularly significant projects: Air quality biomonitoring, Circular economy, Integration of bike paths, Transition to electric vehicles, Gender equality and D&I, Planting a forest area north of the airport, Air Side north photovoltaic plant, MuoviAMOci Project, Sustainable Supply Chain, ESG-Oriented Business Model, AdB’s Group for SDGs.

For other sustainability aspects and commitments, please refer to the Group's Sustainability Report and the following pages.

In 2023 Bologna Airport has joined the United Nations Global Compact to establish the strong commitment to respect and promote the Ten Fundamental Principles on human and labor rights, environment and fight against corruption and to act in support of the objectives established by the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) promoted by the UN 2030 Agenda.

Adb has also signed the Companies’ Manifesto for People and Society, promoted by the Global Compact Italy, whose objective is "to spread the ambition of a growing commitment by the private sector in the social dimension of sustainability in the company, along supply chains and in communities, aiming for value chain involvement, and going, where possible, beyond legal obligations, in order to ensure a fair and sustainable future for generations to come, leaving no one behind". By signing the Manifesto, AdB aims to confirm and further strengthen the role of the social dimension in its corporate strategies, to generate long-term value also in the supply chain and in the communities in which it operates.
