Sustainable woodland management

Bologna Airport has completed the creation of a wooded area north of the airport. It is a green area of about 40 hectares, equal to 56 football fields, and was designed to absorb carbon dioxide and preserve the landscape.

As part of the territorial agreements, the area has been identified as a strategic green infrastructure, with the specific function of environmental mitigation and compensation to protect nearby residential areas, as well as to restore balance from a landscape and ecosystem perspective. The project is also included in the Decarbonisation Plan through which the Airport aims to achieve net zero direct and indirect emissions by 2030.

The creation of the wooded buffer zone therefore represents an ecological restoration project focused on the provision of ecosystem services, with particular attention to microclimate regulation, the reduction of atmospheric pollutants, and the conservation of biodiversity in highly urbanised contexts.

Our goal is to obtain Sustainable Forest Management certification in accordance with the principles established by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC). The certification promotes the development of a forest system designed to enhance carbon sequestration, conserve biodiversity, ensure landscape integration, and protect water and soil resources. This approach is based on transparent and constructive engagement with local communities, delivering shared value and ensuring long-term environmental, social and economic sustainability:

• A quantifiable contribution to the local ecosystem services;
• improvement of the area's environmental quality;
• responsible conservation and management of resources.
