Rostov on Don
A city of the Russian Federation located in the south on the river Don banks, Rostov gained the nickname of 'Harbour of the 5 seas' despite not being built directly on the sea; it is connected to the river Volga through a channel which gave it access to the Azov, Black, Caspian, Baltic and White seas.
Rostov on Don is held as the door giving access to the Caucasus for its geographical position as relevant commercial and infrastructural junction, and it is also a territory where diverse populations have been living for ages: Cossacks, Russians, Armenians, Greeks, Georgians, Turkish and Jewish.
The old town, dating back to XVIII century, encloses different sacred buildings, a mirror of the various cultures hosted here: synagogues, mosques, Greek cult churches, Buddhist temples and catholic churches.
Founded in 1749 following a decree by the Empress Elisabeth of Russia, Rostov on Don is today a prominent cultural centre.
If you are after some history, you cannot miss the Ethnographic museum of the region and the figurative arts museum, embodying large life and history snapshots taken from the blending of the various cultures present in the area. And if the theatre enthrals you, the city offers several gigs throughout the year, alternating opera and pieces of prose to circus events in seven different locations.
Rostov on Don is home to about 2,000 firms, among which is found one of the largest industries in the country which builds civil and military helicopters and planes.
