Sixth Russian city by population size and capital city of the Tatarstan, Kazan is an important commercial, industrial and cultural centre.
It is situated on the western bank of the river Volga, and it is considered to be the Volga's Istanbul, a place where Europe and Asia look at each other from the minarets, churches and mosques.
Right its urban architecture is a blend between some stiffer traits and other softer and livelier lines. The city was founded at least 150 years before Moscow and its independence is strongly established.
In Kazan, a must-see is the Kul Sharif mosque. It is found inside the Kazan's Kremlin, and it was built between 1996 and 2005 in honour of the old mosque of the Khanate of Kazan, destroyed in October in 1552 during the siege led by the Moscow Tsar Ivan the Terrible.
Despite its recent construction, its light blue and white spires rising towards the sky as well as its imposing dome make it a symbolic site of the city. Kazan's Kremlin also belongs to the Unesco World Heritage.
A splendid view I soffered by the orthodox Cathedral of St. Peter and Paul. Measuring 52 metres of height, the building accounts for the tallest church in Tatarstan, as well as an importance instance of the baroque Russian architecture.
The Agricultural Palace is also a must-see, home to the according Ministry, a magnificent building recalling the Classical style, richly decorated with pastoral scenes.
Tatarstan also boasts some among the richest oilfileds on the Russian territory.
