Fez

In the north of Morocco, sitting on a fertile valley among the Maghreb hills, 350 metres above sea level, Fez is one of Morocco's holy cities, the oldest of the four imperial ones, whose foundation dates back to the end of the 8th century.
Popular for its fortified Medina, a tangle of historical alleys where you can easily get lost and where it is possible to buy typical handicrafts on display in the souks, Fez has numerous monuments worth a visit: the Royal Palace, the Bou Inania Madrasa (the only one boasting a minaret), and the al-Qarawiyyīn Mosque, which is also home to the oldest Islamic University.

Another unmissable experience is a visit to the open-air tanneries. Our advice is to reach a panoramic terrace from which to observe the succession of coloured tanks in which the skins and fabrics are immersed and left soaking. The best time to visit the Tanneries is in the morning, when more is going on in terms of activities.
