Marseille

A wonderful harbour city on the Cote d'Azur, Marseille is the oldest French city. It was founded 2600 years ago by Greek seamen coming all the way from Focia in Minor Asia. Today Marseille is a big modern city that yet has been able to keep track of its past.

If you long for breathtaking views, a must-see is Notre Dame de la Garde Cathedral. Not only is it a brilliant example of Neo-Roman Byzantine architecture: it also boasts the highest setting in town, where you can enjoy a full sight of the sorroundings and of the isles.

Another unmissable site is the area sorrounding the Old Port, around which the city developed throughout the centuries, and 'Le Panier', the oldest district in town. Castle d'If is another popular place, formerly a prison sited on an island in front of Marseille where the Count of Montecristo was imprisoned, as the novel by Alexandre Dumas has it.

If you'd like to jump into modern times, then don't miss 'Cité Radieuse', a building by the Swiss architect Le Corbusier. For nature and sea lovers it is possible to visit the Parc National des Calanques.

At night, Marseille wakes up and turns into a lively city offering many cafes, venues and restaurants featuring a great variety of fresh fish dishes.
