Luxembourg

It is the headquarter of European agencies and bank branches, it enjoys a central position in the old continent and is also one of the main power and diplomacy centres in Europe. The Grand Duchy of Luxembourg even boasts a very fascinating history with many towns worth discovering, with a blend of modernity and past allure strictly intertwined.

The country's capital city is Luxembourg City. Its focus is the Place d'Armes, from which the whole city stems. It is a medieval square enclosing the local history with the City Hall and the pillar built in memory of two national poets. Some pubs, venues and shops liven up the city centre, which is as lushy green as the rest of the town. A few steps along the green pedestrian walkways you enter into the gothic dimension of the city, with its Notre Dame cathedral, less famous than its twin sister in Paris, but as enchanting. Built in 1600 by the Jesuits, it hosts many religious art pieces as well as the remains of the Grand Dukes of Luxembourg.

But how did the Grand Dukes use to protect from their enemies? An answer to this question is found in the rock engraved on the promontory dominating the city: the 'Casemates du Bock' are Luxembourg's underground core. An armed maze built in the middle of the 18th century, it consists today in kilometre-long galleries winding from the vestige of the first Grand Dukes' castle. The 'Casemates du Bock' are among the Unesco World Heritage.

The Chemine de la Corniche was re-christened ' Europe's balcony', a panoramic path only a few minute walk away from the capital city, past which you can visit the Grund district and the valleys surrounding Luxembourg. Through this path it is also possible to reach 'Casemates du Bock' from Notre Dame cathedral, or viceversa, enjoying the breathtaking views on the city.

Besides, the city surroundings offer fairy-tale like buildings. Visiting the most popular Vianden Castle, erected on an upland in the very city of Vianden, one is projected into a princely atmosphere where today festivals, concerts and events are held, granting the many tourists a dream-like experience.
