Santander

A nice tourist site on the north Spanish coast facing the Atlantic Ocean, Santander offers interesting cultural hints and a dream-like sea! The ocean climate ensures a cool, windy summer and a mild winter.

Santander is lush and green, deserving the nickname of ‘garden city’. Walking through the streets, you will come across its scented gardens of cedar trees and magnolias and the numerous parks stretching towards the beaches. The beaches themselves represent its main boast. From its large bay protected from the winds, up to the wildest Atlantic Ocean, sea lovers looking for relax or sport fans will equally find their thing.

The best beaches are found in the El Sardinero area: Bikini playa and la playa de la Magdalena are quiet shores with a mild sea, and in the latter you'll also find a sailing school. On la Magdalena ridge rises the Royal Palace, which is the main city attraction. Built between 1908 and 1912 as a summer holiday resort for Alfonso XIII of Spain, it is now a monument open to the public. Surrounded by a 25-hectar park, you can reach it on foot or by train, and it overlooks the ocean in a breathtaking view: you can behold the small isles of Los Ratones, Pedroda, La Torre and la Horadada.

Other beaches more distant from the city centre are: Somo Beach, for surf lovers, located straight on the ocean and thus a windier one. Playa del Camello, named after the rock with such shape, and from which you enjoy a stunning view of the Isla de Mouro with its lighthouse; Playa de Mataleñas, considered as the most glamorous in Santander; Playa de Valdearenas, rich in dunes of fine sand.

In Santander you will not miss nightlife, amidst venues and casinos, yet boasting all the services that make it an ideal place for young people and families alike.
