Exceeding 6 million passenger today
It’s a record: in the last 7 years Marconi Airport has increased passengers by 50%
Today Bologna Airport has gone beyond the wall of 6 million passengers per year for the first time in its history. In 2013 its growth has reached +3.8%, especially as a result of the increased number of passengers on the international flights.
Marconi Airport is proving to be one of the few “healthy” Italian airports, as compared to the average Italian trend which is still recording negative numbers. This is a remarkably outstanding result for the Company, even more important because it was achieved in a recession year. Also, the airport has gone through a difficult period: the restyling and extension works of the passenger terminal have caused some inconvenience and discomfort to the ordinary airport operations throughout the year because of the different yards both in land side and in air side.
On this occasion, Marconi Airport’s President Giada Grandi and General Manager Nazareno Ventola have publicly thanked Sab staff, the airlines, the handlers, the government boards, the trading operators and all those who belong to the large “Marconi family” for the result achieved. The historic record has been celebrated awarding the sixth millionth passenger with six 100-euro coupons to be spent in the airport’s shops. The passenger representing the historic target of the sixth millionth passenger is Dante Calauti coming from Frankfurt.
The new traffic record of 6 million passengers – 80 years after the start of the first commercial flight from Bologna – is the result of a policy aiming at developing the offer, carefully mixing legacy airlines and low-cost carriers. In 2013 new routes have been launched: Bilbao, Bucharest, Cluj-Napoca, Dublin, Eindhoven, Iasi, Sofia, Timisoara, Tunis and some frequencies have been increased (flights to Barcelona, Catania, Istanbul, Valencia). Some news have already been announced for year 2014 (Alghero, Manchester and Oslo with Ryanair, Craiova with Wizzair and Paris with Vueling), always keeping in mind the sustainable growth of the airport and the development of the territory.
Here are the stages of Marconi Airport’s growth: in 1988 passengers per year reached 1 million for the first time, the number doubled in 1995, it became three million in 1999, four in 2006 and five in 2010. This means in the seven last years Bologna Airport has recorded an increase by 50% in passenger traffic.
From the first passenger on 4th September 1933 up to date, Marconi Airport has transported around 90 million passengers and has developed an offer of over 100 destinations both domestic and international.
It is also remarkable that exactly today the Airport’s Twitter account @BLQairport has exceeded 6.000 followers thus confirming its leadership in Italy.
