Despite the sorrounding still negative trend, due to the persisting economical crisis, the difficulty witnessed by some airlines (which have, on Bologna, reduced their flights’ destinations and frequency) and the presence of the ongoing building sites for the last stages of the renovation plan of the Terminal building, the year 2013 recorded a new growth trend for Marconi Airport.
As a matter of fact, 2013 represented an improvement with respect to the previous 2012, on various levels, i.e. the volumes growth, the economical results, with an increase in passengers figures, profits, EBITDA and fiscal year profit.
On the level of economical results, the growth of aeronautical gains (+3%), that can be attributed to the rise in passengers figures, and of commercial gains (+6%), that benefitted from the new commercial areas available after the renovation works and the positive trend of the parking areas, made it possible to close the financial year with a turnover of 79,7 million Euros, 4% more than the previous year.
The slight rise in external management costs (+2%), mainly linked to the increase in air traffic and in the airport management lease and partly compensated by the expenditure limitation performed on the other cost items, allowed a considerable growth of the EBITD, risen to 16.3 million Euros (+12%). The management of all ancillary items, impacted upon by the ongoing investments and the rationalisations of the shares, and the corporate taxes (equalling 2.1 million) led to record a net profit of 2.3 million Euros, a rise by 43% in comparison to 2012.
The long-lasting domestic recession, the difficulties some airlines were faced with (decreasing routes and frequencies) and the Terminal restyling works still in progress in their final stage did not prevent Bologna Airport from growing in 2013 too, reporting figures that go the opposite way as compared to the average of Italian airports.
Marconi closed year 2013 with the unprecedented traffic data in the airport’s history: last 18th December, the record of 6 million passengers was set up for the first time (by the end of the year the number was 6.193.783) with a 4% growth on 2012. Bologna Airport has turned out to be one of the few Italian airports to have recorded the plus sign as compared with a negative domestic average (- 2,1%, source Assaeroporti jan – nov).
In detail, traffic increase was caused by the international flights (4.555.610 passengers, +7,9%), especially stimulated by the new- entry airlines (Transavia, Tunisair, Vueling and Wizzair), the start-up of new routes (Bilbao, Cluj-Napoca, Dublin, Eindhoven, Iasi, Sofia, Timisoara and Tunis) and by the higher number of frequencies of existing connections (Barcelona, Bucharest, Catania, Istanbul, Marrakech, Tirana and Valencia). Domestic flight passengers have instead recorded a minus sign (1.630.955, -5,7%), caused by Italian recession and Alitalia cuts.
As regards the carrier type, it should be noticed that traditional legacy carriers transported 2.932.099 passengers. Low-cost carriers served 2.974.178 passengers and charter flights 220.944 (59.344 transit passengers are to be added to the charter passengers figure).
Total movements were 61.281, marking a decrease of 3,2%. Air freight grew remarkably: 33.555.947 tons of freight transported by air.
Paris is top of the pops among Bologna Airport’s favorite destinations (473.431 passengers for both De Gaulle and Beauvais), followed by London with around 440.000 passengers (sum of Heathrow, Gatwick and Stansted) and Catania totaling over 300.000. The top ten also shows Frankfurt, Palermo, Madrid, Istanbul, Rome, Munich and Casablanca. Among the rising destinations, Moscow (+222% passengers) and Bucharest (+184%) are on top.
