Work in progress
Terminal restyling and expansion
The Project
General Objectives
For the period 2011-2013, the Bologna Guglielmo Marconi Airport planned the restyling and expansion of the Terminal.
Main objectives of the operation:
- increase spaces and improve the usability and acceptance of the terminal;
- increase and diversify the spaces dedicated to commercial activities (landside e airside);
- adjust and improve the technological systems with a view to continuous improvement of passengers services.
What will change
In summary, the planned measures are intended to:
- create a single check-in area on the ground floor (in Area 2);
- expand the boarding area (with the inversion of the Schengen and Extra-Schengen halls);
- unify the Baggage Reclaim halls;
- expand commercial areas and adapt the new internal flow of the airport with the creation of the 'walk through' (commercial spaces with large walk-bound for passengers directed to boarding gates);
- renovate the existing technological systems;
- create 5 piers with 2 air bridges for the direct transfer of passengers from the terminal to the aircraft.
Why expanding Bologna airport
The structural expansion was necessary in the light of the increase of passengers of the recent years - more than a million in 2007-2010, by crossing, on 22nd November 2010, the historic threshold of 5 million passengers/year - and for the further development of traffic in the coming years.
The airport of tomorrow
At the end of these works of restyling and expansion of the passenger terminal, the new structure will be larger and will offer new services and an improved quality travel experience.

The five phases
Works will involve the closure of some areas in various stages of construction, to avoid compromising the functionality of the terminal, which will always remain open and functioning. In order to minimize the inconvenience to passengers, the phases of construction have been previously shared with all the airport operators. We have therefore identified 5 stages of construction in the two years of work:1. First phase
Will begin a series of diversity and parallel operations in three Areas: In Area 2 (Ground floor), for the construction of the first part of the new unified check-in area (to limit the discomfort, a part of acceptance is transferred to a provisional terminal, East Terminal); in the boarding area, for the extension works of existing spaces; in the Arrivals area, for the expansion and upgrading of Schengen and non-Schengen halls.
2. Second phase
Will start the expansion of the second part of check-in area now devoted to the treatment of hold luggage. At the ground floor, near the main entrance, and at the Boarding Area, will begin the creation of new commercial spaces. In non-Schengen arrival hall toilets are retrained.
3. Third phase
On the ground floor between the escalators and the Arrivals hall, commercial areas are redeveloped and a new area for the car rental companies is created. Near the new area check-in is created the new ticketing area. On the ground floor comes off the inversion of the halls Schengen and Extra-Schengen area, the repositioning of the passport control desks, of security gates in Marconi Business Lounge and of police offices, as well as certain structural operations and expansion. On the first floor at the Boarding area, will begin the renovation of the security checks (which will increase from 7 to 10 stations), the realization of the first of two walk-through (non-Schengen) and the second part of the structural enlargement.
4. Fourth phase
At the ground floor the new check-in area is completed. At the first floor continues the restructuring of the security checks, the creation of the new offices for airport operators and the upgrading of existing commercial areas.
5. Fifth fase
In the fifth and final phase will be concluded the work on the third part of security controls, the completion of the boarding areas, the changes to the passenger hall of the first floor, the operations for the commercial spaces overlooking the hall and the latest finishing works and plant.
