Environmental Management System
Our Environmental Management System (EMS) compliant with ISO EN-UNI 14001 requirements, which guarantee the effectiveness of the environmental protection measures in place. As an airport, we know that building relationships based on mutual trust with surrounding communities and other airport operators means speaking a common language, based on accurate and shared information. Our EMS is designed to measure the environmental impacts from airport and aircraft-related operations (including noise, water quality, energy, waste), using numerical indicators that are able to quantify the magnitude of those impacts. In addition, the EMS provides for the adoption of various internal procedures aimed at ensuring that the appropriate preventive and corrective actions are implemented in the event of significant, potential or actual, environmental impacts.
Noise is undoubtedly the most important aircraft-related environmental issue for the surrounding area. As an Airport Operator, we are firmly committed to constant noise monitoring, and maintaining close contacts with the authorities responsible for regulating civil aviation and air traffic management, in order to implement appropriate measures to reduce airport noise.
Help fight global climate change
At Bologna Airport we have long been focused on energy efficiency and we are engaged in a number of specific initiatives aimed at energy management and reducing our carbon footprint. The numerous technological upgrades carried out in the period between 2001 and 2012 have enabled us to minimize the increase in energy requirements resulting from the significant extension of infrastructure and increase in air traffic (runway lengthening, Air terminal expansion, Area 2). In fact, energy consumption for heating has remained the same, while electricity consumption has increased by about 10%. In relative terms, the energy consumption traffic unit has decreased by 30%.
Airport Carbon Accreditation scheme
To ensure accurate and comprehensive energy management, SAB has implemented a CO2 emissions management system (CMP - Carbon Management Plan), validated by the independent certification organization CERMET, based on the adoption of internationally recognized standards (GHG Protocol, UNI ISO14064). This system, integrated with the other management systems (ISO 9001 and ISO14001), allows us to manage CO2 emissions with a view to continuous improvement. In recognition of the results achieved and the efficiency performance, Bologna Airport has been awarded Airport Carbon Accreditation - Level 2 "Reduction" by ACI-Europe (Airports Council International Europe), as part of the international certification scheme which also includes other major airports in Europe and Asia.
Participation in the European D-AIR project: Cleaner Airports, Decarbonated Regions
Proper energy management cannot disregard a constant commitment to expanding knowledge and expertise regarding innovation opportunities in the technology sector and systems for the territorial integration of the airport within the existing environment. For this reason, Marconi Airport is participating, together with the Province of Bologna, in the European project D-AIR "Cleaner airports, Decarbonated Regions" developed as part of the territorial cooperation programme INTERREG-IVC. This programme aims to improve the effectiveness of regional development policies in the areas of innovation, knowledge economy, environment and risk prevention and to contribute to the modernization and competitiveness of Europe through the exchange and sharing of best practices developed by local and regional authorities in Europe.
The D-AIR project aims to provide its partners (not only Bologna, but also the Mazovia Region, Swedavia, the City of Leipzig, Eindhoven Airport, Transport Malta, Mitteldeutsche Airport Holding, and El Prat de Llobregat) with economic support for scientific research aimed at identifying innovative solutions for reducing CO2 emissions from airport operations and from the traffic generated by/attracted to the airport. In addition, the project includes study visits to all partners to strengthen the sharing of knowledge and experience.
Energy Management System
In order to improve our energy management performances, we have implemented our energy management system, compliant with ISO 50001 standards. This is developed with the support by T-ZERO, which has operated within a funding from Italian Ministry of the Environment.
Bologna airport is one the few Italian airports ISO 50001 certificated.
The airport is served by complex water collection and distribution systems. For years we have pursued a water saving policy through a strict program of protection and prevention. We conduct a thorough water quality monitoring campaign, in compliance with waste water discharge authorisations and in collaboration with certified chemical laboratories. The water quality surveys are also managed according to specific procedures set out in the environmental certification and the results of chemical analyses are shared with ARPA.
