Island in the Ionian Sea, it belongs to the Ionian archipelago.
Extremely well-known for the social life and the wonderful naturalistic scenarios, among which the Shipwreck beach, Keri caves, the Turtles island.
It is also renowned for having been the native place of Ugo Foscolo who dedicated it the famous sonnet ‘A Zacinto’.
The Shipwreck beach is situated on the north-western coast of the island and can only be reached via sea.
It owes its name and fame to the MV Panagiotis shipwreck, a freighter stranded on its shores back in 1980. Right from the backwash of the sea crashing into the ship originated the pearl white beach, contrasting with the iridescent blue of the waters.
Such exceptional colours hues are also found in the stunning Keri Caves, again only accessible via sea. They develop near the promontory of Marathia’s Cape, in the south-western area of the island.
Another landmark of Zakynthos is the National Marine Park situated in Laganas Bay, where the ‘loggerhead sea turtles’ come hatching.
