The green city, located in the south-western part of the Russian Federation, offers very interesting cultural and architectural insights just a few hours away from the Dead Sea.
The name 'Krasnodar', i.e. red gift, was given in 1930 by Stalin to the city of Ekaterinodar 'Ekaterina's gift', as the city was previously known.
In fact, the city was founded in 1793, when Catherine the Great delivered some land to the Cossacks, so that they would erect a fortress.
On this land, the city was built along the banks of the river and the lake Kuban, and today it presents an original layering of various architectural styles: from the Neoclassical, to the Art Nouveau going through the sacred orthodox style, until the soviet '70s architecture to reach the more recent skyscrapers of the modern age.
Krasnaya Street offers an unmissable walk, the street that splits the city vertically from north to south, and on which the greatest majority of the historical sites and symbols are found, among which the statue of Catherine the Great and the Arch of Triumph.
The street is also the heart of the city shopping, with its several cafes, shops and restaurants.
For those into Russian history and culture, please make sure you do not miss the Memorial Museum of Krasnodar and the rich indoor views of Bogarsukov Villa which hosts it. Right in this residence built in 1901 it is possible to behold breathtaking golden and silver ceilings representing some events which took place in the Caucasian steppe.
For nature lovers, it is possible to pay a visit to Catherine's Garden.
Recently, a new city park was inaugurated, which measures 22 hectares featuring 30 different climate areas, a summer amphitheatre, observation point, water and music maze and a fountain that turns into an ice-skating rink in winter.
