Capital city of Ukraine, Kiev is a major industrial centre and a cosmopolitan city where the Russian imprint is still extremely engraved. The country has been independent from the Russian Republic since 1991.
The great wonderful religious buildings in Russian style are a must-see. St. Sophia (1037 AD) is known as the Cathedral with the 13 domes, with frescos covering 3 thousand square metres of its walls. St. Michael, more recent than the former, dating back to the 14th century, stands out over the city with its golden domes.
Kiev owns a city centre which was renovated several times after the world wars and the independence war. Today the oldest street, Andriyivskyy, still boasts the original stone flooring and during the day it houses a market selling souvenirs and typical local products. The road stretches out until the Dnieper river.
It is right in the summer time that the river livens up with the presence of the many visitors of the resorts who want to enjoy the mild temperatures. On the contrary, in winter snow covers the city in a white charming carpet, with temperatures far below the zero.
Other sites worth a visit are Maidan square and the historical and the Chernobyl Museums.
